Raclette grills are a Swiss style of cooking dishes that have been popular for centuries. The origin of raclette grills is thought to be the Valais region of Switzerland. After a day of herding or working in the fields, men would melt the edge of a block of cheese by the fire, and scrape it off to add flavor and richness to a potato or vegetable or pickle. Raclette is actually translated at “scrape”. The raclette melter allows one to hold cheese next to a fire and then scrape the cheese, the closest derivation to the original use. The grill is a derivation this early origin.
There are many types of raclette grills. Their common denominator is that cheese can be melted on them and scraped off. Some utilize grill tops that are unorthodox such as a granite slab which emphasize the traditional use of such a grill. Most of these raclette grills accommodate multi-purpose uses, so that people can use them for a range of purposes.
Many grills have a surface available for each person around the table, and range from two person grills to eight – sometimes even more.
There are a number of accessories which enhance the experience of a meal with this unique grill. Cheese cutters come in many varieties.
