The fondue pot is the key element in the fondue experience. There are many kinds of fondue, but other than fountains, you will find a pot as the centerpiece.
The fondue pot is also the symbol and source of this ancient tradition as Swiss shepherds would get together around the fire and throw some cheese in a pot. Families and friends would get together around a camp fire or the fire in the home and create an even deeper richer community experience as everyone dipped from the same pot in the midst of community sharing.
Over the years, and particularly during the twentieth century, types of fondue have expanded dramatically, perhaps most significantly, because the variety of heat sources have created such broader possibilities. The candle heated fondue pot might be considered the most traditional, but it has never been the core heat source because of the lack of significant heat for a whole pot. Candle configurations work well for chocolate and some cheeses.
The gel heat source can generate more heat and more variety. It is a good heat source for cheeses and chocolate. It may have a challenge in heating oil efficiently to cook morsels of meat.
A flame from a fire or a stove can heat up a full range of variations of fondue in a wider range of pots. This has been a tried and true approach for a very long time.
A real breakthrough that has created a quantum leap in types of fondues and locating the pot is the electric heated pot. A good electric heat source can create a pot that is completely portable and can be adjusted to virtually any temperature.
There are a vast range of types of fondue pots. There are ones made of cast iron, which harken back to older traditional posts. Many are aluminum, or steel or alloy. Some are made of other synthetic materials. The common denominator is that they all play that central role that brings a group of people together to create community to enjoy a fondue pot.
